Picket LSE in support of Mapuches Chilean president visit

President Piñera is speaking at the LSE on Monday 18th October at 6.30pm. Support the picket to protest his government’s continued repression of the Mapuche people. Meet outside the LSE 6pm. Bring banners, whistles – Make it noisy!

The picket on Monday at the Chilean Embassy in solidarity with the Mapuche people was a success. It is important to continue our support to the Mapuche people as they are in struggle for their rights and the Chilean government doesn’t hesitate to use heavy tactics against them.

The Mapuche of Chile are struggling to claim back rights to their ancestral land. These rights have been sold to big forestry and other capitalist interests whose activities not only drive Mapuches from their lands but despoil the environment. Mapuche protests have led to the detention of their leaders under laws against terrorism imposed under the Pinochet dictatorship.

Several of the imprisoned Mapuche went on an 89 day hunger strike. The strike ended with some victories. The anti-terrorist charges against them were withdrawn which would allow them to be tried in a civil court. However there remains many demands which are still unresolved such as Mapuche land, and end to the anti-terrorist legislation.

797 MAPUCHE PEOPLE OF CHILE

“That this House notes the continuing repression of the Mapuche indigenous people of Chile, the recent hunger strike by Mapuche political prisoners since 12 July 2010 and the demands of the Mapuche people for the demilitarisation of Mapuche lands, an end of the use of the anti-terrorist legislation introduced against the Mapuche people during the Pinochet era and self-determination; and calls on the Government to make strong representations to the Chilean President on the issue, in particular during his forthcoming visit to the UK.”

Chile’s ghosts are not being rescued (John Pilger)

The media swarmed as 33 copper miners were winched to safety from their underground prison in Copiapó. But the cameras were blind to the plundering, abuse of indigenous people and history of disappearances that have poisoned the country.
